10 Running Tips for New Beginners to Follow

Running – Definitely an intimidating hobby to get into especially if it’s something you have never tried before. Running can become second nature with a little bit of consistency and the right mindset. I am going to share 10 running tips that will help you out on your running journey 🙂

But before I do, I wanted to share my back story with running.

I joined cross country my 8th grade year. Before this I had no prior running experience nor did I know anything about running. Yet somehow I ran the next 5 years and loved every second of that experience (Some of my most favorite memories are from cross country and being with my teammates and being silly at practice while we did some of the most challenging workouts ever lol).

Anyways, once I got to college my priorities shifted a bit (I did not run cross country in college) and running became harder for me to keep up with and feel motivated to do. What this ultimately made me realize is that running is one of my pure joys. When I am not running I just don’t feel like myself. So, now that I am graduated I have slowly been getting myself back into running. The tips I am going to share are the exact tips I have been following myself in order to get back into running in a non overwhelming way.

1. Get shoes with support

I have gone through many running shoes in my past and trust me, finding ones with support is crucial. If you don’t have that support it will likely cause some pain over time that will make running not enjoyable. I currently have Hokas Clifton 7s and they have changed the running game for me. Super comfortable and don’t cause any pain in my body (plus there are a million different colors to choose from!).

2. Find a comfortable running pace & stick to it

It’s easy to start off a bit fast when you begin running. It’s important to note that if you do that, you’ll likely be tired in the next 5 minutes and you’ll want to give up. Running for a longer period of time is all about keeping a steady pace that is comfortable for YOU. Once you find that sweet spot you’ll find that it’ll be easier to keep going.

3. Have a goal for how long you want to run for

I suggest when you are first getting into it to set a running goal of at least 10min. Now 10 minutes might not seem super long but when you are just getting into running it can be! After those 10 minutes are up and you feel like you can keep going then great! But if not, also great! Be proud for completely that. The more you run the longer you will be able to run for.

4. Stay consistant

Running is all about consistency. The more you run the easier it gets. I don’t suggest running every single day, allow for your body to rest. But find what works for you. Little by little you will notice that those 10 minutes have become super achievable and running isn’t as scary as you once thought it was.

5. Don’t be afraid to walk

Having to stop to walk can be a bit discouraging at times. I know for myself I want to prove that I can keep going but sometimes you need 30 seconds to catch your breath! Catch your breath, stretch and then keep on going.

6. Keep your hands free

I highly suggest getting a running belt or an arm holder for your phone, keys, or whatever it may be. Having to hold something while running can get super uncomfortable and sometimes that’s all you can focus on. Allowing your hands to be free of stuff will allow you so solely focus on the run itself.

7. Queue up music beforehand

Having good music on a run makes all the difference. Queuing it beforehand ensures that there will be no distractions and you don’t have to fidget around with finding music to play.

8. Start on flat ground

When starting out I suggest running where it is mostly flat. After you have been running for some time you can add in some hills/inclines to your running route. Attempting to include those right off the bat will only make it harder and can be discouraging. So start off flat and slowly make your way up!

9. Track your runs

Tracking your runs is helpful for many reasons. You can track your time, distance and pace which can be useful in tracking how you are improving over time. It’s neat to look back and see where you were and how much you’ve grown!

10. Use positive words

Running is a mental sport. If all you are doing is talking negatively towards yourself running will never be enjoyable and you’ll never get anywhere with it. It can be as simple as saying “you’ve got this!” or “Just 5 more minutes.” It makes such a difference, I promise. So believe in yourself and talk highly to yourself. Running isn’t easy but you can definitely do it!

Running is a process. It takes consistency and a positive mindset but it’s super rewarding. Try not to be hard on yourself in the beginning! If you try to follow these tips to help you along the way, you’ll find that running isn’t all that bad 🙂
